About 15-20 years ago, I had trouble with lenses that were higher index than CR-39. Polycarbonates made me dizzy in a somewhat large frame, and some other material I tried had lots of prism effects in a small frame. At first I assumed that now I'd have the same trouble, but then I read that the lens materials have improved. I have a strong prescription that's virtually the same as the one I had back then, and I've had no trouble with Zenni's standard 1.57 lenses. (I've bought from other places online, but only CR-39 lenses, which have always worked fine for me, so I can't comment on anyone else's lenses.)
I think it also helps to use smaller lenses for strong prescriptions, since that means less change in thickness going across the lens. --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ Check us out at the oft-updated http://www.glassyeyes.com!
