Unfortunately this probably won't help you because you want the glasses as a Christmas present, but I just ordered progressives from Zenni that are in the -13 range. (No, that's not a typo--I really mean -13.) When and if I get them, I will post information on how they are.
I will be amazed if they actually fill the order, because last year they told me they could not make me bi-focals, but the order appears to have been processed with a bit of "human intervention" -- I got a very tardy email confirmation that appeared to have been reviewed by a Zenni employee. So, maybe I'll get them, and I hope they'll be wearable. If not, well...live and learn. One problem you will find is that Zenni does not allow you to order progressives with a small lens height, so the glasses will be thick. Most of their "multi-focal" frames are huge, and you will need to try to minimize edge thickness by picking a rounded frame; rectangular is out even if you mother wants to be trendy. If she's only a -5.5, you may be OK; I assume my glasses will only be used as spares or for when I'm painting the ceiling, swimming, or doing something else where the glasses may be damaged or lost.
