Hi Brian, I agree with Chalo on all points, and strongly second the recommendation of polished edges in any case, metal or plastic.
Polished edges not only look better from the sides, they also greatly improve your appearance from the front, by reducing the ring-like reflections inside the lenses. I have a strong prescription, and with polished edges, even rimless look good on me. With your prescription and a small frame, you can get good results and save money with CR-39. If you want or need a bigger frame, then the 1.67 index would be worth the money. If you simply want to look your best, and can afford the high index, then by all means, go for it! The frame width, lens size, and bridge width make a big difference on how thick the lenses will be. Face shape and fashion considerations aside, the closer your pupils are to the center of each lens, the thinner the lenses will be. If your PD is small, and the glasses you choose are wide and/or have a wide bridge, then the lenses will be asymmetrical in thickness - much thicker on the temple side than the nose side. The correction will be fine, but the lenses won't look as good as in a smaller frame. My prescription is similar to yours in the left eye, but -9.00 in the right eye. Even at that strength, I have CR-39 sunglasses in a plastic frame that are just fine, and not too heavy. For clear lenses, I always choose high-index, which looks OK at -9.00, and very nice at around -5.00. Good luck, and enjoy your new glasses!
