To buy glasses online, it helps to be at least a bit of a do-it-
yourselfer. Years ago, I already had some understanding of the
prescription form. To most people, it's as sacred and mysterious as a
prescription for a pharmacy. And though there are online pharmacies,
most of us find out about them through spam that sounds too good to be
true, and hear about them selling counterfeit or adulterated drugs.

At the same time, more people are buying from online eyeglasses
stores, and Luxottica is shooting itself in the foot more and more,
especially during a recession. And hybrids are showing up, such as
decent local eyeglass stores with good prices.

The other thing that may save a lot of money and unnecessary
eyeglasses in the long run is being more conservative about putting
glasses on kids. If I had a kid who was starting to have trouble
seeing the blackboard, I'd first experiment with reading glasses for
close work, rather than giving him nearsighted glasses with
instructions to wear them a lot in order to get used to them. (I'd
also make sure there wasn't anything else wrong with his eyes besides
simple myopia.) I'd also make sure there wasn't something causing
stress when he's in the classroom. This is analogous to taking a hard
look at vaccinating kids at younger and younger ages with vaccines for
less and less significant diseases. Qui bono?
