There are *ways* to tell the truth that won't insult the doctor.

1)  I got them at another shop, out of town.  This is both true, and
accurate...and doesn't insult the doctor or his practice.

2)  I tried one of those online places...came out pretty good, didn't
they?!  After all he'd already complimented you on their quality.

My first online pair was purchased with the active assistance of the
local optometrist's office...she wanted to see what the online shops
offer!

Respect the doctor...don't lie to him/her.  Simple tact will soften
the blow...and reinforce their respect for you, their client.
