Greg / Percy:

I went to pick up a visitor at IAH last night and as I circled the
terminal buildings together with all the other people that are not allowed
to stop at the passanger pick up area I thought to myself how the
terrorists would laugh their heads off if they could see us. There was
plenty of space to park at the recently expanded passanger pick up area.
We could stay in the car as we used to before, even keep our engines
running because after all it was cold. and we could have stayed out of
everyone's way for 10 to 20 minutes waiting for our passangers. But
noooo... The mayor and city council decided that we would only be allowed
to stop if our passanger had been standing there waiting for us, Until
then we have to drive round and round the terminal trying to avoid
construction workers, passangers loading and unloading bags, stray luggage
carts, limousines, taxis, parking lot busses, police, drug and bomb
sniffing dogs and the eager baggage handlers. All for nothing.
If the idea is to prevent a car bomb or a bomb in a bag, it is useless.
The hourly parking is inside the terminal three floors up.
A bag could quite easily be hand carried from the passanger drop off to
the baggae area, left on a conveyer where nobody would remove it if
unattended, and the culprit would just walk out the passanger pick up
area, right past the dogs, police etc.
Who is doing the thinking?
They removed sweet and low from planes because of the anthrax scare, They
broke the file off my nail clipper, but then they serve me wine in a glass
bottle that I could quite easily break against the sharp edges of the
anatomical armrest of my coach class seat and use it as a nasty weapon...
Not a day has gone by without a mention of 9/11 on the radio. Just about
everything that does not work or happen gets blamed on 9/11.
When are we going to drop it and quit giving terrorists all this
satisfaction and more to laugh about?
I have a hard time explaining to my visitor from Colombia that this is how
we try to prevent terrorism.
It makes him laugh too.
He tells me that like the terrorism and drugs in Colombia, as long as
someone is making money off it, it will continue. All these efforts to
combat it are nothing but a smoke screen.
