I think the float dropping quickly is more from the design of the gas tank - rather than from burning gas faster. Since the gas tank flattens out at the bottom (think triangle), the float drops quicker when you burn the gas drains the top down a bit. The first two gallons is when it drops the greatest travel. I don't know if this was intentional, but it definitely grabs your attention when you see the bobber dropping. But you have more gas than you think.
