Uh, I think I'm having flashbacks...  I was just discussing exactly the
same 
thing with an A&P today, right down to the 3 seals and dressing the crank.

He indicated that there is a low pressure area created between the spinner

and cowl that can draw oil from father inside the engine compartment, to
wit 
the crankcase spline bolts.  Have you checked in that area?
