Fred Weick, the Coupe designer, said the nose-gear fairing gives an improvement of one (1) mph at cruise. He told me it had been calculated and carefully measured to be so. The snubber cable was added by Forney when they went to the double-fork nose gear, if I recall right. It was intended to shorten the double-fork gear to be the same length as the single-fork (fully extended) gear. Some people want the snubber for safety. The bolts or pins holding the nose gear cylinder in the tube are pretty small, I'm told. There has been a case of both retaining bolts breaking and the nose gear falling off the plane. I would think the sissors would also have to brake for the gear to fall out. If you want the snubber to prevent a possible triple failure, go for it. If the snubber cable is long, the nose gear fork and wheel are out of the slipstream. If they're short, the fork and maybe part of the wheel are in the slipstream making more than one mph worth of drag. My plane has a snubber because my mechanic is one of the suspender and belt and glue kind and I don't want to snub him. If I change mechanics someday, I'll probably take off the snubber and see if I can get a fairing. (We will disassemble the nose gear and make sure both retaining pins are intact before removing the snubber cable. I, too, like systems that require three faults before a system failure happens.) I recall some people saying the extended Nose would touch ground to early while landing.. I guess I'll have to find out myself . Just recently acquired an original Nut Cracker fairing. Univair sells them at around $80 for the older scissors only. If you have aluminum casting scissors, you need some luck to get a hold on a used fairing. (or have someone modify the fairing Univair sells you). Next annual it will be put on and then I'll see the big difference.
