Hi David,
    Perhaps you misunderstood my meaning. I agree that all the other
hardware must remain in place and
in good repair. (Except for the nutcracker fairing.)
    The only purpose the cable serves is to keep the nose wheel from
extending to it's maximum length.
Thus not allowing it to strike the ground before the main gear does.
