I have done what I advised others not to do...tried to evaluate the annual
cost of owning an airplane...my Ercoupe..
At a value of $15,000, deferred investment at 6% 900/yr
Ins hull & Liability
600
Tie down @ $35/mo
420
Annual
500
Maintenance
500
Engine reserve
500
40 hrs/yr flying at 5 gal hr @ $2.00/gal 400
Total
$ 3820/yr or: $320/mo
If a hanger is available at $150/mo, then the Monthly costs goes to
$435/mo.
If one excludes the offset investment ( thinking the Coupe will increase
in
value, then the Monthly costs at 40 hours/year ( aprox 4 hrs/mo); the
Monthly
costs becomes $360/mo In Hanger @ 40 hrs/ Mo ; or tied down $245/Mo.
This equates to an hourly cost of :
$108.75/hr. with hanger storage;
$90/00/hr with storage in hanger not including investment loss;
$61.25/hr with outside tie down.
(Fly more hours, and the fixed costs stay the same, so hourly costs come
down..)
Big Boys/Girls Toys are expensive, but no more so than boats, golf,
etc....(that's my excuse.)
Having use of a hanger allows one to play with the toy when not flying...
:<
). (Tie down allows one to show off the coupe :).
So, there is the expected cost of owning and operating a coupe ( I may
have
left out something....) and it is more expensive than renting a 150 at my
airport : ( $50/hr), but I do enjoy the ability to go when I want and in
MY
airplane.
So, now, having one person's projected costs before you, you may be able
to
evaluate what a lease involves and the value of a committment _ both on
your
side and the owner's.
