I think that's a little misleading Bob.

Under the proposed Sport Pilot rule you will still need training. Granted,
it's less than currently required (20 hrs minimum vs. 40), but it is still
a requirement. And you will still need to take a check ride. The only
major difference is you will no longer need to take an FAA medical exam.
So it's not like every bozo on the highway is suddenly going to jump in a
plane and go flying once the rule is made law.

Add don't forget the relatively limited number of planes that meet the S/P
restrictions. You can't just jump into any Piper or Mooney (or Cessna, for
that matter) on the field, buckle up and hit the switch.

Besides, how many of us know, or have heard of, a fully licensed pilot who
had done something really stupid and injured or killed him/herself and/or
someone else? Heck there have been pilots with instructor, instrument,
commercial and every other kind of rating that has done something dumb
because they either weren't paying attention or over estimated their
ability.

I really don't think the Sport Pilot rule will put a lot of NEW pilots in
the air. Some, surely, but not a lot. What it will do is allow a lot of
current pilots, who lost their medicals for unwarranted reasons, to resume
flying. Now it may be argued whether that is a good thing or not, but I'm
not worried about a bunch of untrained yahoos clogging up the skys.

At least that's how I see it.

Personally, I'd rather be in a plane any day than out on a congested
freeway. It's so easy, at least in CA, to get a passenger car driver's
licence.  Scary.

*****I agree completely.  However, do you realize that if this 'Sport
Pilot' thing goes through that those same people with only that automobile
driving license will be able to fly a plane?   How's that for
"Scary"??????
