Hello Everyone,
Two weeks ago I went to the airport to take a short flight to another
local
field to help a friend with his Ercoupe. When I started the engine it did
not start quite normal. On the first rotation the started stalled out,
like
a hydrolic lock. I pulled the starter again and it fired right up. I
taxied
to the ramp and did a runup and all was normal. On take off, normal. I did
a
left down wind departure and when leaving the pattern Smoke started to
come
into the cockpit.:(.. I did one 360 to check things out and oil pressure
was normal, temp was still cool about 130 and the engine seemed to be
running normal. In the turn the smoke cleared. I thought I was ok, but
when
I leveled off the smoke returned. I called tower and told them I wanted
to
return to the field for a full stop. They gave me landing instructions,
luckily a straight in to runnway 4. On final the tower called me and asked
if I need a Fire Truck. When I landed the engine compartment was completly
covered in oil. The 'Coupe had oil dripping off it all the way back to the
tail. I cleaned it off and walked away. The next weekend my I.A. and I
went
out to look at this. We expected to find something like a cracked case,
broken hose or something obvious. We found nothing. The engine had 2 qts
of
oil left in it out of 4.5. Pulling plugs we found the #2 & #4 plugs wet
with oil. More on #2. Compression test showed normal. We topped it off and
ran it and "NOTHING". We ran it at 2100rpm and "NOTHING". I flew it around
the pattern for 3 touch and goes and guess what? NOTHING! I flew it for
one
hour and everything looked nornal. This engine lost 2.5qts in about 10
minutes of running. It is a C85-12F with a McCauly 7150 prop. Has the oil
filter conversion. Bracket air filter. When I checked the oil that day it
was slightly above 4.5 qts but not 5qts.I have some thoughts about this
but
would like all of your opinions. Luckily I was close to the field. If
not????
