Because the Carb is the end of the fuel system. If you put it farther
away from the carb there is a chance
that some moisture or impurities could be passed on into the Carb.
That's why your cars' Carb has a screen in the floatbowl (at the end
of the fuel inlet line) even though
there is a fuel filter somewhere in the fuel system prior to that.
As for the 'lowest' point in the fuel system, water is heavier than
gasoline and the water will settle in
the lowest point, ie the bottom of the gascolator sediment bowl. That's
why the glass ones are better, you can
see if the fuel is clear or has 'sediment' in the bottom of the bowl.
Only 'Superman' can see through the
metal ones. But then, he doesn' fly an Ercoupe, he flies a 'cape'.
