I have discovered the cause of my recent engine problems.

The 0-200 engine conversion uses a Facet interrupter
pump to transfer fuel from the wings to the header.

Mine decided to grind itself to pieces (while still operating)
and make some metal mud which got through the finger
strainer in the header tank (coarse) through the gascolator
screen (fine) through the carb finger strainer (fine) into the
carb itself.

I'm not sure why a whole bunch of gunk didn't wind up in my fuel sample
when I drained the gascolator---- maybe since the drain is a tiny bit up
from
the bottom of the bowl ????

In addition this stuff was pretty fine and must have been in suspension.
It did indeed settle in the bottom of the carburetor bowl and caused
a bit of excitement.

I will open up the pump when I get the replacement & see what was breaking
down.
I'm not sure how I'll flush the header tank yet. Probably make up a hose
assembly
that fits the threaded opening in the tank bottom & flush it with gas.
That'll be a chance
to make a big mess. <G>

Incidentally moving a Coupe 600 miles on a trailer is NOT fun. I repeat it
is NOT
fun. When I stopped at rest stops to check the tiedowns I was faced with
some
real strange comments. "That's a T-28 isn't it? I saw them when I was an
Air
Traffic Controller in the Navy" I kid you not------ On the other hand I
talked
to some ex-Coupers and discussed my problem with another A & P.

Then there were the people who stayed along side of me flashing a camera
strobe
in my eyes when I was driving through the mountains.

I will miss the Walker fly-in. I passed Bob's field going south with my
brother's car
on the trailer when I was behind schedule and didn't stop. On the way
north
I passed by Walker at 10:00 PM so missed again.

I'll be there next year though.

Cheers:
