I learned something over the past few weeks-

after I did Matt Teixiera's annual and found his bad spar he agreed to
sell me his low time C85 12F. I swapped it out, and sold my C75 with the
prop and accessories to the person who bought the airframe. After
swapping the engine and running it, I couldnt get it to make min static
RPM. I chased all sorts of imagined problems from timing, air filter,
plugs, plug wires, etc..... ( the list goes on).

On a hunch I swapped the tach that was in the airframe previously with
the C85. Well, after that it made min static rpm. The C75 tach is
obviously different, and I'm sure that is printed in some Continental
service bulletin somewhere. The prop shaft seal spits a little oil out,
but other than that it is nice to have 85 clydedales. I could only
imagine what 100 HP would be like............

By the way, at my last IA renewal Ly-Con engine builders of Visalia CA
was there and they do porting jobs on cylinders. They clean up the flow
pattern (it's legal, they have FAA approval for it) and for the "small"
engines you get 4 to 5 HP per cylinder. The main objective is economy,
but the by-product is a few extra HP. They are an FAA approved repair
station and have been doing this for a long time.

They charge 200 per cylinder, and in addition to the porting they replace
the valve seats and re-grind the valves to a 3-step profile. For 800
bucks, you can have a legal 100 hp C85. I dont know what the 0-200 STC
costs but I think that 800 is cheaper. He said the first thing that most
people have to do is then re-pitch their prop to handle the extra power.

I put about an hour on it today, we had 10 mile visibility and a 7K
ceiling.
