I would assert that landing a Coupe well requires a higher skill level
than does a Spam Can because you can t slip to correct approach errors.

The "...because..." part says it all, Ed. Owned a Cessna 150 for 14
years, and got
my license therein. Learned that you could slop through the pattern, and
pull it all
together on final. One of my early lessons was where the instructor flew
to final at
pattern altitude, then used flaps to grease it on. With a full 40 degrees
of barn door
out there, putting the nose down on the 150 did not increase air speed.
In fact, I
came to do my best landings at the higher flap settings!
  Not so with the `coupe.

If you do not have it right on the down wind, you will make
a real hash of it.

*****What if there is not downwind leg? Does this mean that I can no
longer make a 'good landing' on a straight in? Shucks, look at all the
gas and time I'll use while circling around up there and making a proper
'45degree' entry into the 'full pattern' method.
Departing Cottage Grove and landing at Walker is about a 5 minute
flight at most. You just turned that into about a 15 to 20 minute flight
and doubled the fuel usage. Just so I can make a decent landing. :-(
Well shucks!

But, when set up correctly, you can't buy a bad landing.
In short, not "a higher skill level," but different application of
skill.
                       "Know your airplane.
Know it well. Know it's limitations.
                        And know your own limitations."
                                      attributed to Hoover, air show
pilot, ex-USAF,
                                      buddy of Chuck Yeager, etc.
