Bill, as others have written, there is a cross-over tube between the wing tanks which should keep them equal. What happened after you landed? Did the left wing tank level come up again and the right wing tank level go down? If not, your cross-over tube is plugged. If so, Harry is right about unequal pressure/vacuum on your fuel caps. The fuel pump pumps fuel from the wing tanks to the header tank and the fuel gravity feeds to the engine. The excess fuel gravity feeds back to the wing tanks. There is no pumping involved on the return trip. Both wing tanks should be at equal level while in flight, and also when you are on level ground. Check your gravity return line from the header tank to the wing tanks by sliding a flexible plastic tube onto the upper end, which is under the header tank cap, about 1" down, and blowing into the tube. You should hear bubbling in the wing tanks. If not, that line is blocked. At the start of a cross-country flight last weekend, all three tanks were topped off. The left wing depleted quickly, then the float indicator in the header tank began to drop. At the end of the flight, the left tank was empty and the header tank was almost empty, but the right tank was full. I understand that the little fuel pump transports fuel to the header tank as needed, then gravity takes it from there to the gascolator. Any excess is pumped as overflow from the header to the right wing tank, from which fuel is pumped as needed when the left tank is empty and the header fuel level begins to drop. That didn't appear to be happening. Any ideas here? Can someone provide a definitive description of how the fuel system should work, and what the float indications should be as fuel burn progresses?
