Marko -

Thanks for the suggestion. As you probably guessed, I've considered SMS
many times, but I have always backed away from it because I don't trust
Google to keep my phone # private. I can't have dozens of robo calls coming
in to my cell phone, as happens with our land line phone. Opting for the
"Do Not Call" features on land line hasn't really helped at all - everyone
claims to be a charity, a political call, or a survey, or else they just
call anyway, waiting for me to complain and then (eventually) get the calls
stopped for a few weeks or a few months.

So - two questions for you, and these are serious questions: (1) is there
something about the Google SMS system which causes Google to keep phone
numbers confidential? and (2) given that the problem with the Google
password recovery module was that they never sent me the promised link by
email, is there something about SMS which would make Google more
responsive? Another way of putting that is "why would Google respond to SMS
when they don't respond to email?"

My thought throughout this recent problem has been that Google is trying to
push people very hard, to divulge their cell phone numbers. My guess is
that there would be tremendous temptation to "monetize" those phone numbers
- sell them to businesses. Do you think that's a possibility?
