Hi Bill I've had my cell listed with Google for over two years now and have never had a marketing call from anyone apart from my carrier.
One the other hand my land line, which is not listed with Google gets frequent marketing calls. This is in Australia though, so maybe it's different here. This has worked very well for account recovery stuff. On that note, I have put a fair bit of effort into making sure I have all the recover process in place. Backup email, SMS etc. I take the approach that if the option is there I will use it. I guess it's up to the individual about what they feel comfortable with.
