Mind you, I'm not necessarily saying I think Google would never sell our phone numbers. I just think that isn't why they wanted to collect it in the first place. Whether or not they use it for something else once they have it, that's a separate question. With a big corporation, that can be hard to control.
I do think there would be considerable objection if our cellphone/SMS numbers were sold. You would know about it. In contrast to cellphone numbers, most landline numbers are public since they have been in phone books for more than 100 years, which makes them easy targets for both businesses and scumbags pretending to be businesses, even if your number is on a "Do Not Call" list.
