OK, is this the reason? I notice when I initiate a post here, I have a check mark in a box that says "Email updates to me." Again, I initiated my original message from my Gmail account, thinking it would post here, and people would reply here. And that's it--they did! But I didn't look here because I expected replies to come to me via Gmail as they have in the past. I think I've solved this mystery. Now back to the offline Gmail icon mystery.
