Bill, As for the dozens of contacts that showed up but were never on your old phone, perhaps you had some old contacts backed up to Verizon's cloud through Verizon Backup Assistant from years ago. If so the Verizon guy probably synced your new phone to Verizon contacts as well as Google's.
I would go to contacts.google.com from a computer and see if everyone you want is listed there. If that's ok then disable syncing between your phone and anything non-Google that may be listed under Settings/Accounts. Then delete from your phone the contacts you don't want and re-sync your phone to your Google account.
