​You're correct, Marko, and it's by choice.  I don't like the look
("interface"?) of Hangouts.  But it is referred to as a "chat list" if you
click on "Search people. . ." just below the downward arrow.  I was able to
be "invisible" until about the time I bought the Android smartphone, so
Jeff could be right when he surmised there was a connection between that
and the inability to go invisible.

Btw, Marko, I have now joined your father in being part of the 21st
century.
