Quick update. After going to the Cricket store where I bought the phone, the person who sold it to me was on duty and restored it to factory specs (*in far less time* than a Sampson tech in the Philippines told me it would take!). Although things are pretty much the same, seeing her restore what I had before the restoration is something I don't want to experience again, which would be necessary if Samsung worked on the phone. Even what she did has screwed up my contact lists somewhat.
