Okay, at our "org meeting" last Thursday, Rob L brought up the "library
project". It sounded like a good idea to me. I have created a Wiki page
for it, here:

http://wiki.gnhlug.org/twiki2/bin/view/Organizational/SoftwareLibrary

That page is pretty empty right now; feel free to add to it.

It occurred to me the other day that this project needs two parts:

The first part is the preparation of software. This means downloaded,
testing, writing up a brief instruction sheet. This could be divided up to
individual people, based on what they know/use. Geography does not matter
for this step.

The second part is distribution to the libraries themselves. It makes
sense to divide this up based on where volunteers live.

So, given the above, perhaps this would be a good game plan:

  - Somebody needs to be the Project Coordinator (PC). They would be
responsible for maintaining lists of volunteers, software, and libraries, and
who was doing what. They would also have to keep in touch with the
volunteers and make sure things are happening.

  - Some number of people would be needed to contribute software and the
instruction sheet content. We can ask for help on the main discuss list.

  - Somebody volunteered to make up labels. The PC should inform the label
maker of what labels are needed, and how many. The PC should also provide a
list of mailing addresses of people who have volunteered to make CDs. The
labels can be mailed to them.

  - The PC should give each software contributor a list of volunteer
distributors and their mailing addresses. Each software contributor would
burn as many CDs as is needed, and mail the CDs to the distributors.

  - The distributors would receive the CDs from contributors, and then go
around to their local libraries.

  Does the above sound good?

We would, of course, need to approach libraries about this as well. Has
that been done by anyone? I can see potential problems in that some library
operators might not get the whole concept, or think that it's pirate
software, or something.

  Comments?
