There really is an easy answer to the "protection of name" point:  For less than $100 ($75, I believe) someone can register it as a DBA ("Doing Business As..", no relation to Oracle).  Simply put, without anything in the way of dollars in, it wouldn't affect anyone as a tax burden.  Choose one of the most active (read "won't run away with it") members (there are a lot to choose from) and have them register it as such.  When the time of incorporation comes, it can be transferred to the corporation.  Heck, I'll donate the first $25 to the cause.  Being a relative unknown, I wouldn't feel comfortable doing it myself.
