Hmmmm. That reminds me about this: http://wiki.gnhlug.org/twiki2/bin/view/Main/PublicEditorsGroup The restriction mentioned on that page is no longer in effect, right?
It appears Bruce re-enabled that feature, restricting use to a whitelist, rather than trying to maintain an infinite blacklist.
I don't know if the feature is available in TWiki, but a few years ago I ran a Yahoo! group discussion, and we configured the group so that membership required approval. It adds to the overhead of administering, no doubt, but adds a watchman to the gated community. I saw a request or two a day. Many names I recognized. For the rest, I would send a boilerplate email to confirm this person was a real person and not a spambot, and was interested in what the group was talking about (SMB application development). Spambots never answered.
If there's such a feature available, I'd be willing to play GateMaster to try it out.
