It appears Bruce re-enabled that feature, restricting use to a
whitelist, rather than trying to maintain an infinite blacklist.
I don't know if the feature is available in TWiki, but a few years
ago I ran a Yahoo! group discussion, and we configured the group so that
membership required approval. It adds to the overhead of
administering, no doubt, but adds a watchman to the gated community.
I saw a request or two a day. Many names I recognized. For the rest,
I would send a boilerplate email to confirm this person was a real
person and not a spambot, and was interested in what the group was
talking about (SMB application development). Spambots never answered.
If there's such a feature available, I'd be willing to play
GateMaster to try it out.
