I had the exact same problem. I was showing my Linux partitions in the 
extended partition. My solution was to back up my important Linux data 
(Windows had been copied). I then deleted the first  partition and wrote it 
back. Your scandisk/defrag may possibly have made recovery of your 
Linux data difficult at best. If you happen to know exactly what your other 
partition extents were, you can write the new partition table without 
destroying any data in those partitions. Just make sure you don't format 
or anything else. I have actually done this in the past where I somehow 
messed up my partition table. You must have all your numbers right. If 
you set up a boot partition in front of your root (eg. /) partition, you will 
have a better chance. In other words, your former /dev/hda5 is probably 
trashed. hda6 and following each have a better chance. 

The approach I would use is to boot my SuSE install disk, and run the 
YaST partition tool. Once I have the partitions set up, drop into  a virtual 
terminal to examine the partitions. This way you can use a trial and error. 
It's not very much fun, but it learns you a good lesson (sic.).
