Netscape understands pop3. That's what I'm using to post this.
Anyone else have suggestions?

Depends on what he meant.
1. X runs as root, since it needs to access the hw. However, it's
"wrapped" to run under your account. Open an xterm and do a "ps -aux
| grep X" (capital X) and you'll see X running as root.
2. You can run X as root, with root privileges (i.e. startx from a
root shell). I actually do this, to give me a second (:1) display as
root (on a specified vt), that I can use to control the system.
Different backgrounds, and use the function keys to swap to it.
Example would be, from a root login, type "startx -- :1 vt12" This
gives you an X display at the :1 display (the normal one is :0), on
vt12 (alt-ctl-F12).

as in Photoshop? Check out the GIMP. Be sure to download the latest
plug-ins, and you can save as PSD (could read PSDs before).
