If there is, it is a well-kept secret.
Maybe the other Slackware user knows? ;-) <-- Joke

It varies *a lot*. Sometimes, several days go by with only a message or
two. At the other end of the spectrum, we have seen over 100 messages/day
before. I would say ten per day is the long-term average, but I really just
made that up, so don't put too much weight in it. :-)

I wouldn't say the discussion "centered on Red Hat" so much as "more people
are running Red Hat then any other distro right now". Since more people are
running it, someone is more likely to say "I'm running Red Hat 6.2 and ..."
then "I'm running Yggdrasil and ...". Since Linux is pretty much Linux no
matter what you are running, this generally isn't a problem.
There are at least *some* people using Slackware, if that is your worry.

Well, skimming such messages for interesting content might be a good way to
learn more about Linux, if that is one of your goals ... :-)

I don't know of any Linux distribution which only supports the X11 GUI, and
not the text console. Red Hat is certainly no exception. We run Red Hat on a
fair number of server machines where I work, and none of them run X11. So you
don't need to fear Red Hat (or any other distro) simply because you're not
familiar with GUIs.

I wish I was that lucky. ;-)

That alone will help you *a lot*. And also make you rare among users, I
can say! :-)

*blink* I don't think anybody has really considered that before. The list
is hosted on a machine at what used to be Digital Equipment Corporation and is
now Compaq. We've always just kind of trusted them. I know the people in
immediate charge of the list and the equipment hosting it are trustworthy, but
I don't think we have anything in writing from Compaq-the-company that they
won't sell our names to spammers. One can only hope they wouldn't be that
stupid. :-)
On the other hand, the list is publicly accessible and publicly archived,
so if you're determined to protect your email address against spam skimmers, I
would recommend you not post to the list. Or use the web at all, for that
matter. Or email, come to think of it. In fact, unplug your computer and
throw it into a well. But even then, you will still get spam; they just have
to print it out and ship it to you via the USPS. ;-)
