Saw the thread on database choices and the replies regarding Posgres's
reputation for being slow. I haven't used it extensively at all myself, and
I'm aware of the limited usefullness of benchmarks, but the story from
linuxtoday last month was interesting and pertinent to comparing Posgres to the
commercial offerings out there:

I think CA's Ingres is the commercial database based on the the same historical
roots as Postgres, but I believe they've diverged a while ago (can't remember
all the details of the history I read a few years ago, and a lot has happened
since I read it too)
