First off, don't tape the pass phrase to the front of the laptop ;-)
Second, realize, if you lose the pass phrase, you lose the laptop's
contents. :-(
(Of course, all of you know this, but I like to beat dead horses.)
For Windows...
There's a buyer's guide of products at
http://www.nwc.com/1117/1117buyers2.html
In summary, F-Secure's FileCrypto and PC Guardian's Encryption Plus for
Hard Drives will encrypt hard drives. I've had good luck with other
F-Secure products in the past, though not this one. Also, look at EFS
(Encrypting File System) built into Windows 2000. Plus look at jetico
(below) for cross platform solutions.
For Linux...
Start with the how-to at
http://www.kerneli.org/loopback-encrypted-filesystem.html
Also check out http://linux01.gwdg.de/~alatham/ppdd.html
For Both...
Look at http://www.jetico.com/index.htm They do mountable encrypted file
systems for both Linux and Windows.
