I suppose, if you don't live in that world.  The last 6 years of my life have 
been working for and supporting hardware design groups which made extensive 
use of these tools.  So I guess I take it for granted that they're not 
commonly known in the normal world :)

Nope.  All those are DBA (or "Doing Business As") names.  Northern Telecom
was the DBA name previous to Nortel.  They had changed to Nortel from that
prior to buying Bay Networks.  Technically speaking, they are 
legally still Northern Telecom somewhere, but their DBA name is now "Nortel 
Networks", which is what is listed on the stock exchange.
