I have found that if you update to the latest version of E
(www.enlightenment.org) it is VERY stable. I occasionally try different
window managers, on account of the inherent bloat of E, but I find that
there aren't any that have all the features I want, which are as easy to
configure, that don't have all the bloat.
FVWM comes VERY close... but the fvwmrc file is a PIA to deal with (and
don't even mention RedHat's excuse for a config using m4). A GUI config
tool would be much nicer (though I still would want the config file in
flat ASCII format, so as to be able to quickly make tweaks by hand).
I also rather like the gnome helix (ok ximian) desktop, and last I checked
fvwm wasn't compliant. I heard there were patches to make it more
compliant, but I never could find them... :(
