Stupid question, but is the account you are trying to login in to listed
in /etc/passwd and /etc/shadow? Do the two files match? Have you tried
forcing a password change in single-user mode (I'm thinking, maybe RH
changed the crypto algorithm)?

Have you tried turning YP/NIS off and seeing if local users work then?
