You don't need to be!  IPCHAINS is supported by 2.4!  I think there
are some essoteric features that are missing, but most of the stuff
that gets used is in there.  You can compile as a module or compile it
in, but in the latter case only if you don't select the netfilter
stuff first...  Compiling in (or more specifically, a non-modular
kernel) is better from a security standpoint, btw.
