  That's fine; kernel upgrades are tricky enough that I would not want them
being done behind my back.  However, I would think/hope there would be
*some* way to pull the latest kernel binary packages from the Debian 
repository.

  Your answer only serves to reinforce my impression that, in order to use
Debian, you need a fast Internet connection and constant tinkering.  :-)

  Well, 100% of the laptops I have seen running Debian did not have the
needed packages installed.  However, my sample consists of the laptop Paul
Lussier brought to the last meeting, so I suspect my results may not be
indicative of a trend.  ;-)
