First, I am not  all that knowledgeable about Debian compared to others 
on the list so take with a grain of salt.  I believe the following 
packages are needed with the 2.4 kernels in testing for PCMCIA support.

pcmcia-cs    262K
hotplug        34K    I believe this is only needed for cardbus PCMCIA 
support and/or                                             hotswapping 
of cards and USB devices.

pcmcia-modules-2.4.17-(arch)  400K Might be needed also.
The 2.4.17 kernel image is around 10Meg for the generic 386 kernel

Looks like a CD needs to be burned with these and maybe more
