Do not discount that as unlikely. As I mentioned at the meeting the other night (Wed 24 Apr 2002), fixed wireless is becoming more and more common all the time. What is fixed wireless? The opposite of mobile wireless. ;-) A cell phone, for example, roams about the Earth. Fixed wireless systems are wireless links between two fixed points. For example, between you and the ISP. Fixing the antennas in space allows greater range (5 to 10 miles, I am told) with a limited investment in towers and equipment. Most of these ISPs are using 802.11 class equipment -- although generally not the 802.11b stuff you get off the shelf at Best Buy. By using point-to-point fixed-wireless links, an ISP can remove the local telco from the last mile entirely. Anyone who has ever had to deal with Hell Atlantic on a regular basis will tell you that is worth at least a firstborn son. And all these guys want you to do is buy your equipment. MVA <http://www.mva.net> has deployed fixed-wireless successfully in the Haverhill, MA, and is supposedly expanding to other areas Real Soon Now. So if you're tired of hating the local telco, check with local ISPs to see if any are doing anything with fixed wireless. > o _Warning_ to users of Microsoft Outlook Express > o _Warning_ to users of Microsoft Windows Operating Systmes I like this guy. ;-) -- Ben Scott <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> | The opinions expressed in this message are those of the author and do not | | necessarily represent the views or policy of any other person, entity or | | organization.
