A friend of mine had several years of great success with Bit-Net, in Manchester (http://www.bit-net.com), before getting cable modem service; he had consistently good connect speeds and high availability, with few busy signals - they advertise a user-to-modem ratio of 7:1 or better - and very few unintended disconnects. This was before I turned him on to Linux, so I can't speak to their ability or desire to support Linux clients, but his overall experiences with tech support at Bit-Net were excellent, fwiw. A quick scan of their POPs show numbers in Manchester, Nashua, and Milford, so hopefully one or more of them are local to you.
