Greg - Thank you very much for the info on the Thinkpads and Linux.
I didn't log in all day Wednesday, so my response is more of a rejoinder to the other excellent comments that have already been posted to the net. I just took the early retirement package from HP (having worked at DEC since '77, which was subsumed by Compaq and now HP as we all know...). So, I fully understand and appreciate your predicament within IBM. I used to work in the Tru64 UNIX group, so I had to be careful to avoid a conflict of interest with my Linux activities. That said, I think what Paul Iadonisi said really sums it up well. I've never owned a laptop, because like Paul, I refuse to pay the Microsoft Tax, and I'm very skeptical about any laptop being able to run Linux without significant issues over Winmodems, wierd graphics chips, wierd network chips, etc. And, as we all know, it's virtually impossible to work around some of those issues, since generally many of those components are built into (i.e., soldered!) the products - you can't swap a graphics card out and put in a card that's known to be fully supported by XFree. So, if they could at least offer a model that can auto-install SuSE 8.0, that did not have any Microsoft product on it, I'd be very interested. Thanks, Bayard Coolidge ***************************************************************** To unsubscribe from this list, send mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the text 'unsubscribe gnhlug' in the message body. *****************************************************************
