true... it has already been done.... it is pretty much like unity
I prefer the mockup that sombody did... (forgot who it was, sorry) but I
suggested it about a week ago and somebody did a mockup of a panel dock.....
the panel dock is awesome whoever made it... good work

If we need space I know where we can find it.
The top bar is already full, the bottom is occupied by notifications (i
love the Chat).
The right side needs to stay clean, in case of dual screen.
There are those rare cases where people use three or even more screens,
so it's not necessarily free to use. But on the other hand, some may have
the second screen above the first one so all it comes down to is allowing
the user to move and customize the shell. All cases cannot be satisfied
with one model.
So, rest the left side of the screen.
We have wide screens now, I think we can add a little panel, without
losing so much space. I have simply stretched the top panel to the left
side. The old sidebar reborn from the ashes.
So what do you think about this:

This looks pritty much like what Mark Shuttleworth has planned out for
Ubuntu 10.10's Unity interface. It's meant to be complementary to Gnome
Shell: http://www.markshuttleworth.com/archives/383
Tough your mockup looks much better than the Canonical implementation.
