Hi,
There are three (at least) different things signified by
curved lines.
Ties: (LilyPond ~) a curved line connecting two notes of the
same pitch, indicating that one note of composite time
is to be played.
(LilyPond bug/feature: accepts ties between notes of
different pitches)
Slurs: (LilyPond ()) Indicating portamento or legato across
several notes
Phrasing: Indicating the textual underlay of a piece, or
otherwise dividing a piece into phrases.
There are distinct ways of specifying the first two (although at
present, they're not properly distinguished) but no distinct way to
specify the third. Should there be?
At present in LilyPond, ties and slurs are almost equivalent (except
that you can't use ( and ) between chords).
