What does this do to articulation in the Midi output?  Slurs should be 
articulated on the first note only; notes under a phrase mark may be
articulated (although not staccato!).  (I've never used the midi
output, because I have no way at present to play it)

Yes.  I want ties to tie only notes of the same pitch, so that
        < a~  a,>  a
works as you'd expect it to.
