Yes, of course, thanks.  LilyPond does something very similar, if you
type 
        e () e e ~ e

Ties ~ 'tie' noteheads together (whether of same pitch or not),
and are placed bit more 'in between'.

Slurs () connect stems, if direction of slur and stem are the same.
