I agree that the TeX pass is a pain, since you have to muck around to make
sure the right fragments are included etc.. etc.. However direct to
Postscript has a few problems. For one thing a using ghostview/gv is a lot
slower than xdvi.

What about outputting DVI directly. As far as I understand the format is
basically "glyphs in boxes", which should suit the style of Lilypond's
output. Plus it's designed to work with metafonts. If you want
postscript/hardcopy output, running dvips is a lot less painful than the
current TeX pass.
