My message was: a CR-notice isn't *required* to make a work copyrighted
------------------
But *making* a copyright isn't the only issue. Copyrights can be lost
or forfeited (or even seized by the government in the U. S., and the
government is not even allowed to own them under the constitution!) and
they should be *maintained*, even though nothing may be required in
*most* cases.
No way OT. Without distribution and printing there is no point to any
of this. You must have the patience of a saint. *How can you stand it?*
You have people who can afford printers that print on *two sides* who
complain about *wasted paper*?
?????
Why on earth do you want anyone to be able to print on two sides? Are
you afraid of flak from the IBPT? (International Brotherhood of Page
Turners ;-) Wait a minute, there really are page turners in the local
musician's union.) And what is far more important, do *poor* people like
me who have printers that print on only *one* side therefore waste
their paper so that a few rich selfish cheapskates don't waste theirs?
Then these whiners (thank you HWN) bind the stuff into a book and use
one of their personal photocopy machines (the black and white one) to
eliminate page turns, no doubt. Then they can scrape the toner off the
originals and use them again.
Music should be printed on *one* side and bound Japanese style in
accordion fold. (except that orchestral music with one score or less per
page is sometimes made into scrolls. I believe I read of at least one
conductor who does it that way. More will surely follow.) If a person
wants to print on two sides, tell him how very very sorry you are that
he just can't do that. I believe you when you say that there is no
solution to the problem. I have occasional extra pages from ghostscript
printing web pages because of the difference between dos and unix
newlines, and I understand that there is no cure for that either.
IMHO you can't really have a class act unless you decline to support
2 sided printing. Non illegitium te carborundum. (an old joke: Don't
let the bastards wear you down.)
I cannot imagine any document that you might want to print on both
sides, but I have some. By putting the even numbered pages into one
file and the odd in another in reverse order, I can put the stack back
in the printer and get it done. But this is for handouts, not to put
into my music collection. And since I happen to have two documents of
four pages each, I'll just put one document on each side of the papers.
That way I will save paper *and* there are no page turns. :-) At last
corner stapling is good for something. If it were not for writing
this, I don't know how long it would have taken me to think of that.
(The second sign of senility is forgetfulness. I forget the first sign.)
It is always a joy and a privilege to learn something here.
I was quite off in quoting 10 cents a meg for disk space, of
course. You were talking of a server. SCSI + Mucho Euro.
A title page could consist in very small amounts of text and links
(maybe not the right word) to formatting and boilerplate so that it
could be generated on the fly *by the server*. Couldn't that be done
with PHP? That's what PHP is supposed to do, anyway.
And if that works perhaps you can start saving *serious* disk space by
generating the primary documents in a similar way, and the price of
RAM is dropping again at last. How sweet it is... :-)

I don't express my appreciation often enough for the work that you *all*
do, not just for free software but also for Music. Thanks. A lot.
