I really lean toward GNOME.  I'm surprised how well it's running now,
and I suspect that it's got a reasonably long term future ahead of
it.  I'd say it should be the default unless there's some reason not
to choose it.

Yep, and I suspect that's only going to get worse.  This is an issue
we'll probably have to address in the medium term future...
